Day 39 NYC: work work work

Today we had work and man was it busy! The juniors department is still trying to get together their line for the spring 2013. Therefore I was mostly sketching and specking garments all day! It was so fun I also got one of the designers lunch and I checked in some fabrics in my spare time which there was not much of. Tomorrow we have the day off, so yea! Happy Fourth of July to everyone who is reading this still!

Day 38 NYC: Just another Manic Monday

Today was really interesting because the juniors design team had a meeting with Sue and they decided what to put into the line for the spring 2013 season the meeting lasted from 10AM till about 4:30 PM so I did not really get a lunch but it was very educational. This meeting is where they try on the Store samples they bought in Europe and decide what to do with them to make them fit their price point. One sample they had to make in a different knit. One, they could not put all of the sequins in that the original sample had in it. And a couple of them they had to do a more cost effective hem. It was really interesting to see because up to this point I have seen the end of what they do for the season this is the first time I got to see what they base their designs off of. After that I started to sketch what the design team had decided on and then when I and Stephanie got home we cleaned up her house a bit.

Day 37 NYC: Lazy day and True Blood

Today we had a lazy day and watched True Blood that was about it.

Day 36 NYC: Grocery Shopping and appitiser wine day

Today Joe and Stephanie went grocery shopping at this place named Casco and we also went to Wal-Mart too. This was weird because I have not been to a Wal-Mart in 4 months. We decided that we would each make two appetizers’ and then we got 4 wines and tried our appetizers’ with the different wines. I was a lot of fun.

Day 35 NYC: work and then China town and Little Italy

So work was a normal day with sketches and specifications sheets. Then after work we decided to go down to China Town and Little Italy to see it. I got a bag and some souvenirs’ at china town and then went and had dinner at Little Italy. Stephanie and Joe went and had dinner at China Town. Over all it was a pretty good day.

Day 34 NYC: really crazy day

Today I got to work and I was steadily busy and then we had a birthday party in the show room at lunch. It was amazing New York Pizza and then Stephanie and I had to go get an ice cream cake at Rockefeller Center. Then we had to run it back to work and it was 90 degrees out today. After work we went to the Port Authority to get on the bus and the line wait was an hour and a half. So we then decided to walk 10 blocks to the port to take the boat back to the house where we also had to wait there for an hour to get our tickets and then we finally got home!! It was crazy!!

Day 33 NYC: Work

Today at work it started up really slow at the beginning of the day and then about 3 pm it got so crazy! I had to go run errands for sue today. I had to change labels and then do sketches and other things that I have been doing at my internship, but today that the creative director asked me if I had to leave. She also did not understand that I had one more year of school so when I explained that to her she kind of understood why I had to go. I have 14 days to go!

Day 32 NYC: Crazy busy

Today was such a busy day! I got to work and had to do five thumbnail sketches which are when you have to draw a small version of what they want. Then another designer asked me to put them into the computer so I did that for three of them. I ended up having to hand some of those off to another person. I had a busy day bit it was worth it because I got to see how they start to come up with the lines because all of the sketches I did was for the Spring of 2013 for major companies like Dillard’s, J C Penny’s, and Kohl’s. It was really amazing.

Day 31 NYC: work work work

Today was really interesting. I finished a sketch that I had started on Friday. Then I started to organize the samples for spring 2013. When Sue got there and then things went crazy! She asked me to go get her lunch and then she wanted me to stand in her office while she looked at all the samples for the spring 2013 and she would tell us who they were for Missy or Junior. She also gave what she wanted to see in the garments for that season. It was a total Devil Wears Parade the scene were they are looking at belts that are so different and the girl starts to laugh. Of course Sue is much nicer than that and I was not laughing but close enough. That was mostly my day we went through 4 racks of clothing wondering what to change on the samples or that they should design them as is. It was so cool to see the process.

Today I got to sleep in Yea!! Then me and Stephanie decided to go into the city and have fun.  We went shopping in Times Square at Forever 21. Then we went up to seventh avenue and saw that the street was closed down because they were having a huge street fair. Where I bought a pair of earrings two for five dollars. We then went to a few other stores and ended up at Macy's where I found the cutest pair of shoes which were not that expensive for Macy's and then were amazingly cutie so I bought them. Overall I feel it was a really good day and I had a lot of fun!!

Day 28 NYC: Friday!!

Today I did four sketches for Juniors most of them I was sketching the samples that the company had gotten from contemporary stores like H&M and Forever 21. Then I had to Organize the samples from these stores for the spring 2013 season. You have to organize them by either a cardigan and pull over and then you also have to organize them by how they are manufactured, you also have to organize them by sleeve length too. Finally I recolored a manufactured swatch for a buyer to have a different color to choose from but manufactured the same way. It was a very productive day after work I came home and went straight to bed.

Day 27 NYC: Crazy Thursday

Here is the stop we get off at when Joe
comes to pick us up

The stop where Joe gets us from the bus
Today was crazy at work I did a sketch of a cardigan. Then I took a bunch of fabrics and checked them in for the Cut and Sew designers which consists of photocopying the fabrics, then cutting a swatch about half the size of a letter piece of paper and cutting a small swatch of them too. I also arranged all the samples from other companies for them for the spring 2013 season. After that I was pretty much done we got on the bus and road to the first stop where Joe picked us up.

Day 26 NYC: Fun in the Sun

Today New York City got to 98 degrees!!!! Finely! Some warm weather! Anyway today at work I got to run errands in the sun and then I got to do three sketches and I checked in fabric. I also went to Times square and watched the Yoga people for a while. We went to a grocery store after work and then made spaghetti!

So today I worked on shade bands which is when they check the color against the standard and it is bigger than a swatch. I also watched a fitting for Juniors and then checked in some samples then I also took the lurex threads out of a sample for buyers and I do have to go get a pantone color on 35th street and  Broadway. The main stuff I had to deal with today was my mother go to the hospital and then I also got a random phone call from a hospital and I thought that something was wrong with Mike my husband. It was a wrong number but it got me really worried so when I got home I needed a nap and then we ate dinner.

Day 24 NYC: Manic Monday

Today it was back to work. I got to work and was asked to arrange the samples that the company gets from the three manufactures that it uses right now. These are fabric swatches that are about five inches by seven inches and show the types of material that the manufacture comes out with the ones most used by the company that I am interning for right now are as follows.

tape yarn swatch

Tape yarn swatch

space dye yarn swatch
Slub yarns which are a material that has thick and thin areas in the material and are then woven together. Tape yarns are yarns that are rough to the touch (rough hand) and the look of the actual yarns almost looks like a ribbon. Fuzzy is a fabric with...wait for it.... fuzzy yarns! Novelty fabrics are fabrics with something very distinctive such as a yarn or something. Space dyed fabric is a fabric that has the different colors going in a horizontal direction. Finally there are your Basic Blends which are fabrics sewn out of 100% cotton and such that are used in every day jersey and sweaters.

The reason that the company has to organize these swatches in a manner like this has to do with the cost. They estimate that each sweater weighs a pound and so when buying the raw material for the sweaters they have to get it by the pound, so when the manufacture sends these samples they also put how much per pound the fabric is. Based on this company’s consumer market they estimate that it would not be profitable to buy any fabric costing more than $3.50 per pound so they throw out any fabric or stitch that costs more than that. Now here are some pictures of the different fabrics and by the way if the fabric was to expensive for them to keep they let me have the swatches!! How COOL is that!!!

Today was a lax day again I finished sketching a garment and then sent it to the designer via email with another mock up spec page and then I did some organizing around the showroom and the design room. That my day.

Day 20 NYC: learning about fittings

Today I helped get fabric for some of the design team which was interesting because there were so many fabric stores to choose from and then I had to get the right kind of fabric. After that I went and saw a couple of fittings today. They are very good about knowing exactly how much to take a garment up or down and then they also know when to bring the sleaves up or down as well. that was pretty much what we did at work. After work we all went out to a local bar to celebrate my friends promotion.

Day 19 NYC: Getting Kim and Sue ready for Texas

This is a picture of the showroom

The hallway to the showroom
This is where buyers sit and then the
samples are on the white rack behind.

More pictures of the Showroom
with all the samples.

The view from the showroom
thats Broadway!
Today I did another sketch and then I got Kim and sue ready for their trip to Texas to the JC penny’s head quarters so that. They show them what they are coming out with for the next season so I had to organize there samples so that the headquarters can see them and then Kim and sue can talk about them in a good flow so I organized them from sleeve length and material. I also went and ran some errands for cooperate. That was what I did today.

Day 18 NYC: Midtearm

Today I finished up the color library and gave my midterm to my supervisor and then I did another sketch and then my supervisor asked me if I had seen a knitting machine in real life she also wants to set up a time with me to go see that. After that we went home and explored Edgewater a bit.

Day 17 NYC: Back to work

Today I headed to work again and today I did part of a complete technical pack for a garment I did the sketch and the mock up spec page which is a page that have measurements that are usually just to start you on the actual spec page. Then you make the actual specification page in the network that the companies has online. I also went through these Christmas cards that they use for holiday sweaters, and I started to organize the standard color lab dips which are 4inch by 4 inch square that the companies sends to their manufactures to dye and then they send it back until the color matches what they want and it can take a while but when they get it right they file it so that they can refer back to it. I started alphabetizing the colors so that they can refer to them when samples come in so that they can make sure they are the right color.

Day 16 NYC: Cleaning and Unpacking

Today we did laundry and cleaned their new apartment we also unpacked their stuff and got them a little set up in their new place.

Day 15 NYC: Lazy Day

Today I and both my friends had a lazy day so that we could kind of recuperate from moving last weekend and then going to work right after. Today we watched movies and were lazy.

Day 14 NYC: TGI Friday!

The Europea Cafe where I get a salad

The salad has spenage, grilled chicken, tomatos,
crutons, and other stuff. Then they chop it up.

The line to get a salad
Today was a pretty lax day because Kim and Sue are not in on Fridays so everyone gets to kind of finish things up for the weekend. I and Stephanie went shoe shopping for her shoes today and we actually got to see shops this time because last time we were here we did not realize that the shops went up and not out. Well that was what we did today.

Day 13 NYC: of to work

Today I did a lot of organizing again and talked to my supervisor about my objectives that I want to accomplish. She did not think that I could accomplish all the ones I had originally set so she and I changed them a bit to make sure I could accomplish them. I forgot them at work so I will type them in and tell you when I accomplish them later.

Day 12 NYC: Off to cooperate

Today I went to cooperate again to help them out I spaced actual fit samples for the company that have to be correct to the tolerance given which on any measurement is usually about 1/4 and inch to 1/2 and inch either way the manufactures do not have much leeway on getting it wrong and there was one garment today that was too wide in the shoulders which did not work. When the measurements are wrong they have to send it back to the manufactures and then call them and tell them what was wrong. Also this week a lady from the company that I met for about 3 minutes went to Shangri to look in on the manufactures.

Day 11 NYC: work like crazy

More samples from Europe

This was Stephanies desk and my desk for the next week.

Samples that they got from Europe

These are the garments that they use for color swatches

More samples from Europe

More Today and this week will be crazy because it is market week and so all the companies that buy sweaters from this company are here to see what they have for next season with what colors available and so a lot of this week is me running errands and organizing the other sweaters, hangers, and other things so that the designers can find what they are looking for quickly. Here are some pictures of the design room now when its market week.

Day 10 NYC: Hi Ho, Hi Ho, Its off to work we go!

This is me at the bus station
to get my tickets for the bus.

This is the Port Athority where we get
off the bus to go to work. From here
we walk about four blocks.

The New York Times's Building which is
in front of the Port Athority

The horrible hill we have to walk up and
down to go to and from work. This is the
street Joe and Stephanie live on.
Today no rest for the weary not only did we go to work, but we had to find our way to work a different way now that my friends live in New Jersey we have to take the Jersey Transit instead of the New York Transit which was a little confusing but I am glad to say we only take one bus. When we got to work it was already busy because this week is market week were all the buyers from the store come in to see what designs they think will fit for their stores. I had to make quite a few samples where I took the tag out of the old designs from old companies and put in this companies tag to give the buyers and idea of what was coming out this season. I did a flat in Color Matters by myself which took forever; more like 3-4 hours which I guess is ok since I just learned the program five days ago. Finally I did photograph’s of the samples that I took the labels out of for the company’s records on who liked what; which was fun cause I got to hear the Creative Director and the President of Merchandising give their sales pitch and there is a reason that they are what they are! They were so in sync with what questions the buyer would ask and with each other it was amazing to hear. After that we made the hour journey home and unpacked some of their stuff.
